Windows activation key?

Hi

I got what I thought was my windows activation key from computer>system properties at the bottom of the page because I lost the original disc and packaging. However when I try to put it in when I did my reinstall there are 25 characters in total and the number I got only has 20 characters.

Did I pick up the wrong key? Am I doomed!?

Sadly so. The key shown there isn't the key to activate Windows, it's the product ID.

Can you still get into Windows?

Not sure what you can do honestly...
What i do know is the win7 forums are a good bunch and could possibly help
also the MDL forums have good infos

while fixing my uncles infested lappy they gave me a script to grab the Activation key
but as you have said you already re-installed

Possibly a daft question, but is it a custom built PC?
If not, there should be a sticker on the base unit somewhere with the product key on it.

If the windows files are still on thereand you can't boot into windows, you may be able to slave the drive and use produkey.

It can find the keys of installations on non boot drives. Depends if you've mcmoofed de huevosed it.
