I know that I'm old and not the most up to date computer whizz but I have no idea what has happened to my computer whilst I went away for a few days.

Old XP 3200 cpu
Running XP Pro + SP3 .... loads of progs installed etc

All ok (if a little slow) on Fri 6am when I checked a Google map and some mail.
Went away for the weekend and forgot to turn the computer off until last night when I got in.

Fired it up this am and it's all changed ...... Outlook is no longer configured, I have just changed the keyboard to UK as it was set to US, Messenger not signing in and all sorts of other stuff: There is also an account called "ASP.NET Machine A..." which I don't remember having seen before.
I cant say that I notice much in the event viewer either but that could be that I have no idea what I am looking for except red warnings.

Now, it would seem to me that Windows has reinstalled/repaired its self or whatever whilst I was away: as no one else has physical access to my flat, it has either done this on its own or someone else has done it via the internet connection ....... or maybe I'm really going nuts!

I have no idea where the ASP.NET thing came from but as I almost never check anything to do with user accounts, I cant say how long it may have been there ...... maybe someone can tell me if it should be there etc?

I'm quite happy to do a reinstall if necessary but am at a loss as to what has gone on; anyone else ever suffered alien interference like this?

I'm sure that there's a reasonable explanation but I can't think what it is ..... any ideas?

ASP.net is part of Dot net from windows update and is supposed to be there. SOunds like your install was updated over the weekend. Not sure why it lost it's settings though, are you signing into the correct windows profile? If so, try system restore back to friday. Then get the updates while under your control.

how many user accounts are there on the machine..

check in start, run, control userpasswords2

make sure you're logged in as the right one.

Ok guys .... may be have the answer .....

When I logged on this morning, it couldn't find my profile so loaded whatever the defaults are: having spent time yeaterday changing things, it went back to US keyboard, Language bar showing, setting up IE7 for the first time etc.

Looked in the events log and found that the main HD was detected as having a bad block so that might explain it.

Thanks for the help though, most appreciated.

So, Job for the day ..... to put another HD in and a fresh install of XP Pro etc.
