first off i will state i am a complete newbie to this sort of thing apart from faffing around with iso's so i would appreciate some info even if its very basic.

my data harddrive is a 2tb samsung that seems to be failing (smart data is indicating a 1 value for spin up time and i have got windows warnings telling me to back my HD up), so im going to buy a nice new WD 2TB and with this replacement i will also be looking at a OS SSD, one of the new OCZ 120GB vertex's.

I also have a 1tb harddrive that is used as a OS and games harddrive, this is about 300GB used at the mo.

is it possible to image my windows and programs (putting my massive steam folder on a partition) have the image on a different partition or my new data HD and then install it onto my SSD? would this mean i have my current OS on my SSD as it is without having to reinstall everything?

and how would one go about such a thing?

Stop making things complex. Why don't you just re-install Windows onto the SSD (remove all drives first) and then put the data somewhere else where the drive won't fail. If you don't want to re-install everything then try Acronis® True Image™ Home 2011.

Your drive might be under warrenty still.

The free version is free! You will need to buy it if you want all the features. However, the free version can do what you need.

It is usually recommended to install Windows from scratch onto an SSD. Installing programs really doesn't take that long. As for your data drive, hurry the hell up and just copy everything across to the new 2TB drive. Then go out and buy a second 2TB drive and use it for backups. Since you clearly don't do them now.
