Depends on your chipset and mainboard brand, I believe clockgen has ocing for any 965p board, kept that asus and gigabyte boards have software with them for overclock in windows (ai booster for asus for example).

There is all sorts of windows based overclocking but DON'T!
Its a bad idea, I tried it once and it ends up with repeated blue screens until you boot in safe mode.
Best off finding guides and doing it in the BIOS

If you don't know what you are doing in the bios, what makes you think you'll know what you are doing "in windows"? Even if you did know, as has been said, all clocking should be done from the bios. Memory changes in particular done from windows are unreliable at best.

whats the point in overclocking? it lesses the life of the cpu and ram, plus it only makes 5% or 10% different maybe 15%... ive only done it once for about 25 minute then i changed it back.. is it only me that can't see the point in it?

and it's only excessive voltage that kills cpus. most people overclock without increasing the voltage so the cpu will last just as long. and even small voltage increments make no odds to the overall lifetime. the chip will be obsolete long before it dies.

Well, my £120 cpu is now faster than a £650 one. The shortening of the components life is a moot point really as by the time it starts effecting them they're beyond obsolete. (15 years as opposed to 20)
It's basically free performance, plus the challenge is fun.

ok.. thanks for that... but ill probably still won't ever overclock..
one other question.. do ddr800 run under 800mhz always? because i have ddr800 and at the post it says 800mhz but in windows it says 735mhz..

Yes it will shorten the life of the CPU, but I will have replaced it with something faster long before it dies anyway. It will still last 5+ years, probably considerably longer.
Or some real flashy ones allow you to clock the ram and cpu independantly...
Advantages to overclocking are you get to potentially have higher performance at a cheaper cost....
You could spend lets say £100 on a CPU or £200 or just clock the £100 CPU upto the speeds of the £200, so it really only need last at least 50% of its life and you get the same value but without paying the larger sum upfront....
Of course overclocking is better then my shabby example, i take joy in pushing my hardware even just a little to put it on par with friend's who spend £50 - £100 more on each component just so i can rub it in a little when i get that extra performance they paid more cash for.
It's pretty easy, doesnt hurt the hardware when done right, costs less and you get a faster running system to boot!..... did i miss anything?...... OH yes!... and it can be fun to..
