Right, i'm very confused, here is the scenario:

I boot up my mates computer and it comes up with BOOT DISK FAILURE, PLEASE INSERT BOOT DEVICE (or something close to that) first tried formatting the drive, this then works fine for a while, untill i take out the windows disk, then it comes up with the same problem. i tried just setting the hard drive to boot without anything else... same message. everything seems to be working fine apart from this message. However it does work when the windows disk is in the drive and the bios is set to boot from the disk 1st, so it reads the disk asks if you want to boot from it then boots into windows fine, but doesn't without it in!!

I think i've come across this problem in the past and can't remember now what the problem is?! is it a hard drive problem, which i don't think it is as it boots fine with the windows disk in and it reads fine when placed in my hard drive caddy. or could it be a motherboard problem.. the latter of which seems to be the most likley to me, but why?

anyone who can shed some lite on this would be grand.

Thanks a lot

basically, if the only boot device is the hard drive it won't boot, but if i set the cd drive to boot then the hard disk without the windows disk in it won't boot. however if the windows disk is in when i have a cd drive and a hard drive set as boot devices windows will boot fine
