how do i find out what the build number is for my version of windows xp pro?

It'll be 2600, but it does say in System Information (Accessories | System Tools).

e.g. "Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600"

To see that info do this Start>Run> type "dxdiag" without the quotes.
Loads of info there, grate tool.
