Hi all,
I am looking at an IBM Thinkpad for a work colleague, apparently the other day the DVD-ROM drive worked fine and could read CDs, now it can't. The drive spins up and makes some 'grunting' sounds then Windows gives an error: "Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format this is not compatible with Windows."

The drive is a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2512, I've Googled and found several other people with the same problem but don't seem to be able to find a solution.

I've used System Restore to roll back to two weeks ago before the problem but this hasn't helped. I have tried several CDs, ruling out the disc and I am told that the drive WAS working OK until some software or other was installed.

Can anyone help?

It's an audio CD in there at the moment, and I've tried several data CDs - none of which work.

I'm trying to find some Toshiba drivers as I'm sure it's to do with the Microsoft drivers its using at the moment. These were probably installed as part of a Windows Update which is probably what this 'software installation' was.
