Windows - Cant copy some contents of a folder - permissions issue!

Hi all,

I have a very tedious permissions problem going on one of our client servers, they have a shared folder set-up on a data drive, most of which is fine, but there is some folders which I cant seem to backup using a 3rd party app, and it seems its because of a windows permissions problem, now I have checked the permissions over and over and compared them to folders that are working, and they are exactly the same permissions, exactly the same owner.

The only thing else that it could be is that the files are possible in use? although I have checked the server over and cant seem to find an application which could be using them, is there anything available weather it be a build in windows feature or tool to see what could be using potential files within this folder, or find out why I am not able to copy to and from this folder even though I have checked the permissions with another folder which work ok?

Have you tried changing ownership then taking it back again on one of the files? I had a similar issue before and it was down to network issues on the box, it couldn't authenticate properly, warning signs were in the event log but nobody had noticed them. Sorted out the network issue (someone had put in a slightly wrong DNS server e.g. 10.1.10.10 instead of 10.10.1.10 and nobody had picked it up)

Just seen this, for anyone that is interested on what the issue was, it was nothing to do with folder ownership or permissions, as mentioned this was all checked.

It was actually to do with the files within the folder, being encrypted by who ever created them, so would either have to be decrypted by the original creator, or somehow a certificate would have had to been generated somehow.

In the end we just ignored these few files, as we couldn't find the original creator.
