windows cant find graphics card

got a weird one

got a base unit and it didnt have a graphics card

so i put one in, displayed fine, however windows couldnt find it, so drivers couldnt be installed, so it was really slow

so i bought another graphics card, installed it, thinking maybe the original card was dead and now i have the same problem?

anyone know what could be wrong ? the graphics card clearly works as its displaying via vga thru it!!! also i can raise the resolution to 1280 x 1024 i think, so quite high but its not there in device manager, windows cant seem to find it, and i cant install and drivers for it so its running dog slow in games and videos??

have you tried downloading the latest drivers from the card manufacturers site and installing them ?

what board and what card is it ?

ive tried, but the ati drivers wont install, it says 'please install graphics card as vga to allow installer to continue' or something along those lines and then it quits

previous card was a geforce 4 and with forcewear it just said 'this package contains no information about your hardware' when trying to install it

graphics card im trying to install now is a 9800 xt and the board is an asus, not sure exactly think its a a8vgm-x

ok ive sorted it, this is going to make me look a bit silly but

previous owner had a pci graphics card running on the system for some strange reason, i didnt realise but for some reason theres a switch in the bios where you have to select pci or agp graphics, i would have thought if you had an agp card in with a monitor attached it would have realised you wanted to use it!

anyway switched it over and it works as if by magic, i should really close this as a reference for someone else and also so nobody can poke fun at my ludditeness
