windows crashing with external hard drive

used to work fine before but recently whenever I try to move files from pc HD to external and vice versa...windows flashes a message saying error occurred and whether or not i want to send a report to microsoft and then the documents page shuts down. this is well annoying. external drive is seagate. anyone have any clues as to why and any possible solutions?

yeah usb - i think i got problem sorted - seems like an Xvid driver was causing the problem. thanks
