Hi all,

Just rebuilt my old kit into a second machine and having lots of trouble. Nice fresh Windows installation.

Frequently, the whole thing just starts to... well, break. Click the IE icon. Nothing happens. Click Start, the menu appears, but sometimes won't go away. Or you'll click Properties on Desktop, and get nothing.

So it all gets too much and you decide to restart. Windows then just sits there for hours on 'Saving your Settings'.

Any ideas? XP SP2, DFI Lanparty Ultra-D, A64 3200+, 2Gb Corsair. Tried swapping out the ram, problem remains. Any suggestions?

Try bringing up task manager (ctrl+shift+esc) when it appears to be doing nothing & see if anything is maxing out the CPU.

Also might be worth checking the event viewer for any hanging apps or services.

Task Manager won't actually come up once it starts doing not much. Everything just... dies.

System restored back to before I'd put anything on the machine, touch wood its ok so far.

How is the hard drive?

What you are describing happened in exactly the same way to a friend of mine. On listening carefully, the drive wasnt sounding too well - and indeed on swapping it out for another drive the system was perfectly well.
