Windows Defender

It sure is. Curious. The follwoing was suggested to me but didnt work, may work for others:

SFC /SCANNOW

from an elevated cmd prompt. In the Start search box type cmd. Right click on cmd.exe in the list above and pick Run as administrator.

Didnt work for me, but good luck to you if you have this issue.

Was anybody else finding defender made their computer boot incredibly slowly?

I killed the service and stopped it from running at startup, and now windows boots massively faster...

Heres the solution which worked for me:

Go to Windows update. Click on change settings (on the left). Check
"never check for updates." Remove any other checks (Recommended update and
any other). Then go back to Defender and run the Updates again. Version
downloaded should read 1.15.2336.7. It will also download a couple? of
Windows updates. After, don't forget to go back to Win updates and change
back to auto setting.

Having had the same problem I've found this on microsoft's site : http://tinyurl.com/yp9mq5 which is basically the same as howiepoohs suggests.
For me the problem seems to be having enabled "microsoft update" as opposite to just "windows update", even after the above workaround if I reenable "microsoft update" I get same error in defender and no updates are found for vista os while if a leave "windows update" updates are found for vista.
