My Mrs has just bought a new laptop preinstalled with Vista Home Premium.

I've always used XP so it's a bit of a mystery to me at the moment. I'm looking through some of the new features (new to me anyway) and have come across Windows Defender. Is it something I should leave running? Does it hog resources etc?

I've installed the latest free Avast anti-virus on the laptop which seems to be ok, and I've turned off all the scanners except for the web one as she doesn't use the other features it covers.

Is there anything in Avast that I should tweak or just leave it to do its job?

might as well remove Avast

then install Microsoft Security Essentials it'll replace Defender as it's included within it..

Don't think it does. Windows Firewall is still active for me with MSE installed.

You don't need a 3rd party firewall at all if your router has one built in. The routers hardware firewall is much more capable than any software firewall.

Router Firewall + Windows Firewall (may as well have it on) + MSE = Safe enough. Any virus or malware will more than likely be your own fault.
