Windows XP died for no apparent reason on my system (see sig).
It said the file c:\windows\system32\config\system
had corrupted and it wasn't able to boot even in safe mode.

It suggested I boot from XP disk and press R to get to the recovery console.
Thing is, once i was there it was just like a restricted MS-DOS

anyone know anything about this or what to do in this situation ?

cheers.

try running sfc /scannow

Put the XP cd in the rom, start>run> type sfc /scan now (note the space between th c and the /) hit OK

This will replace/repair any corrupted windows files

Going to Start -> Run would be pretty tricky as he can't even boot in safemode, but I imagine it'll also work at the recovery console.

put ** xp disc in the drive and boot from the cd, choose to install windows it will search for any previous versions of windows, if it finds any it will give you the option to repair it choose this then it will remove the current windows files and reinstall the windows core files keeping all your data there :P

go into the dos thing and get into the drive you boot from then type HELP

This will give you a list of commands

CHKDSK \p should firstly check the disk and then fix it. Also try the MBR and bootsector ones (Can't remember commands, look in help). Every time this has happened this has fixed it. Don't forget, after you do it give it a couple of chances to boot up (Chris1712's tookj about 3 goes).

thanks for all the info and links.
I ended up reinstalling windows at the time, I only lost what was in Windows folder which wasnt too much, just a pain i need to reinstall everything again. Anyway I will be reformatting and installing it again once Ive backed up all my stuff.

At least i know what to do if it ever happens again!
cheers.
