Windows disc?

Hmmm well its a retail sticker under the machine not oem as i thought. Got hold of a disc and when i enter the serial key its saying the key i entered is not valid.
Is there any way round this?
Nothing dodgy with the laptop was just full of virus's so wanted to do a clean install.

Let me start all this again lol.
I have been given a laptop that was working but running very slow and full of virus's. It has come from a family friend and they have owned since new, but unfortunately they have lost all the discs that came with it. Well the laptop is a fair few years old.
Now the only way of fixing this is to reformat it, now is this possible without the original disc?
It has a coa sticker underneath, so what i thought i could do is just get hold of a windows xp disc and use that but with the serial key that is with the laptop?
