Anyone tried using WET for migrating a program installation from XP to Vista?

I know that you have to transfer the files separately, but apparently WET can transfer registry entries relating to a particular program.

Now OK, I realise that it might not be such a great idea migrating a full program installation from XP to Vista, BUT you can of course Create a Restore Point (in case it all goes terribly wrong).

The reason I'm considering this is because the program (in XP) in question has components to it which I don't necessarilly have the install EXE's for anymore. It would be a monster job (and maybe not possible) to do a fresh reinstall.

SO anyone tried migrating a program install from XP to Vista with WET? Does it work at all? Chances of success?

Thanks

Short answer....NO chance of it working.
XP and vista reg entries completely different to start with.....
also too many other OS differences.

Ok thanks. I was just thinking that a app like this might be generally capable of "translating" differences in registry format (and other differences, perhaps with some informed human intervention here and there)...

Oh well. Seems like it should be technically possible (although not necessarily possible as a "fully automatic" process)... maybe not for all application types (my app is not specifically dependent on drivers such as GPU or whatever). Heard of any apps that attempt to accomplish this?

I don't mind trying since a Restore Point should be sufficient for bringing the "system state" back to where you started.

Cheers

there's no software out there that can accomodate for multiple 3rd party programs, it's just not feasable

just install programs as you need them, much better to run a tighter ship :)

just do a fresh format for the vista install

Ok thanks. Needed to know if there's any point in barking up that tree.

So I'll just focus on somehow getting the software and all (or at least some of) it's additional components installed. Unfortunately some of the install EXE's for the components I've lost and are no longer attainable. Bit of a pickle.

Sometimes there's no easier way.

Thanks for help

It's an older installation of Delphi (I know, I know... "yucky pascal")... that and a whole varied library of components that I added to it over the years.

I still like using it for making the occasional quick solution for this and that when nothing else does exactly what I want. Something about it (and that particular version of it) that I like. Later versions of similar "builder" environments have gotten way too messy and over engineered.

Small chance it might need compatibility mode within Vista, but I doubt it.

AFAIK WETC is taken down from its Beta and I would not bet on its outdated version at the moment.

Another option is PickMeApp - a tool for program transfer. It does transfer many applications from Xp to Vista and in free Beta bow.

In combination with File and Settings Transfer Wizard (Accessorie/System tools) PickMeApp can solve at least a part of your problem.

Finally there is paid PCMover that claim to be able to transfer a whole system, but it also have contradictory reviews.

Thanks for those. I haven't managed to find anything like that.

I'm not in a rush to transfer the software, so I'll start studying both of those options carefully. After picking one, I could try simpler test transfers (with simpler installations)... perhaps just from XP to XP at first. In fact, I could settle for transfering the target software to a newer XP machine instead of to my new Vista machine.

That would be so fantastic to get that entire installation transfered.

Thanks for the ideas :)
