Hi

I am looking to build a kids homework PC. Basically interenet will be heavily restricted, no ebay, youtube, cbeebies, friv.

No installs of minecraft and other brain matter destroying games.

Most importantly adult filters.

What options are there?

Linux may be an option if I can get an office suite that can produce xls and doc files which can be read by a windows machine. Not too keen on openoffice variants.

I had an issue when I made a CV in openoffice (exported it to word format). Sent it off and then turned up for interview and interviewer printed the CV and all the tables & breaks were broken and looked a mess.

You do realise games are good for your brain right? (Obviously as with most things there is a balance and it does depend on the game.)

In answer to your question however, you can put a filter on some routers, blocking certain IP addresses from getting to certain places. You can also run Windows with Family Safety features enabled and leave the kids on a standard account with UAC on so that they cannot install anything etc.

There are various other things you can do, read this article: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2042233/how-to-child-proof-the-internet.html

Out of interest, how old are the kids in question?

its for my nephews actually. They are addicted to league of legends and spend all their spare time playing it. The kids are actually young adults and doing a levels. I realise that at this point they are basically free to do whatever they want and if they're nt motivated nothing can help them.

But they are a bit immature, dont realise that education is their future and tey need to be very disciplined and get good grades to get into a good uni in a good course to make it in life.

I fixed their broken laptop. Laptop fell and DC power jack broke. I repaired it using s £3 part. Then gave it to them and the first thing that got installed was bloody league of legends and now they're playing team games 1 on desktop the other on laptop and spending all evening playing team LoL which is now more addicitve .

Then they would find ways around any restrictions, or won't use the computer at all.

This thread has suddenly gone from reasonably normal, to completely bizarre.

i have another group of nephews and nieces who are 6,7 y/o and they are addicted to minecraft videos (who watc cbeebes). Sorry I mixed up the info for families.

They will also get another computer for me and I need to lock down the computer.

Their reading was very bad because they were glued to their iPad and their mum and dad confiscated the iPad and now it's improved a lot.

They will need to use a computer at one point so I want to give them a PC that is usable for word processing but not so that they can spend all evening watching youtube.

Ahh right OK so they are 6 and 7, that makes more sense. I was confused for a moment... :p

DNS filtering will probably be the best option. Not had any experience with this though.

that would be an option if they were my own kids and I could monsitor their use every day. Howevever I will be away from their house for most of the time and there are all sorts of time suck. E.g. if I block youtube they can go onto the myriad of other video sites and search for vids there. Likewise social media sites are constantly popping up.

I/m sure there must be a Linux distro or some sort of windows addon which will provide a out of the box solution.
