Hi guys,

I have a Windows 7 Retail copy on my laptop that I want to move to a Mac I will be purchasing soon.

Ideally, I want to pass on the old laptop but I lost the OEM installation of Vista a long time ago.

With DreamSpark Access, I can download:

  • Windows Embedded 8 Industry
  • Windows Embedded Compact 7
  • Windows Embedded Compact 2013
  • Windows Embedded Standard 7
  • Windows Embedded CE 6.0

Sadly, we don't have premium for a full blown OS.

Can I use any of these as a main OS on the other laptop? I have googled but it's a bit unclear about what they actual are. There are also a load of server editions which I have posted below.

Thanks in advance

Ash

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Server Editions

  • Windows Server 2012
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • SQL Server 2012
  • SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008
  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer
  • Windows Virtual PC 2007
  • SQL Server 2008 Express Edition

In terms of the licencing on those editions you can't install them and use them as a daily driver they're for testing only IIRC
It's been a while since I've looked around Dreamspark but there will definitely be a licencing condition of some sort that will say you're not allowed to use them in this way.

Dam. Does this also include the server editions? I'm sure I read about people using the server edition as a main OS.

My university is silly. AFAIK DreamSpark Premium is a yearly payment that covers unlimited usage. Yet my Uni pay per department and won't share the premium between departments. So they actually pay more as three departments have it and mean less student get access :S

It includes anything downloaded from things like dreamspark, technet, MSDN:AA they all have licence restrictions that mean they shouldn't be used as daily drivers.
