Windows Explorer crashes for no apparent reason

It's been happening about once or twice a week. A message will appear saying that a program has had to close, it lists it as Windows Explorer, the taskbar disappears for two or three seconds then reappears. This doesn't seem to effect any other program. It seems to do it at random intervals, I can't work out what's causing it to crash. Yesterday it happened whilst defragging, this morning it happened whilst using firefox (it doesn't normally happen that frequently), in the past it's happened when I've been doing nothing at all. All my major drivers are up to date (my mouse and mp3 player aren't), I'm running XP sp3 pro edition (completely up to date).

Anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Hi there,

do you have the skype plugin for internet explorer installed?

Removing this solved my numerous "this program has stopped working" or whatever the error message was that I was getting. It typically crashed as I was closing a tab or window.

If not, then hopefully someone else will be along with some suggestions. :)

*edit apologies, thought it was internet explorer, not windows explorer. Please ignore the above :)
