"Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working" - Any Solutions - Please help if you can!

For sometime I've been unable to use my desktop because the above message keeps appearing on screen on boot up. This is then followed by a message: " C:\Program Files (x86)\ Java\ jre\ldin\client\jvm.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support".

The system is frozen and while I have briefly looked for solutions i've taken to using my laptop instead.

I've decided to take today to resolve the problem and will ultimately do a fresh install but am not sure I will be able to save all my docs (most are backed up) so would like to avoid this.

Any solutions to the above problem or advice would be gratefully received.

Cheers

Peformed an SFC scan on the computer and when complete the following message came up:
"windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them"
details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs|CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log"

Does anyone have any idea on how to proceed?

I think I have to manually replace the corrupted files once identified but to do that I think I need the original windows 7 disc (need to find first!).
If anyone does come across this , please confirm how I identify the specific files which are corrupted.
Cheers

I think I had this issue a couple of years ago - I believe I used my windows repair disc...
Wouldn't hurt trying some free registry repair software I suppose.. (although that may or may not fix it)

so you just inserted the original windows 7 disc and selected repair instead of install?
will try if there's a chance it will work
thanks for the reply

thanks but can't get DVD drive to run
won't let me open up the drive folder in computer
dvd drive won't auto run
any ideas?

You tried running from safe mode and opening the drive folder from there? or even booting from usb... (not sure how to do this but I've heard its possible)

yes, running in safe mode
might have to try a clean install
concerned that if I don't de-activate windows first then it will look as if I'm installing on another pc/hard drive
any thoughts on this?
cheers for your help by the way

I doubt you'd have any issues regarding reinstalling windows because if I remember correctly, the activation/serial is linked to your registry/motherboard or something along those lines... I wouldn't bother de-activating tbh

cheers - found disc and product codes, just have to find my office disc and product codes then I'm going for a clean install....

Can't you boot to the repair disk instead of trying to access it from Windows? Just set the boot priority to the disk from BIOS, and it should be able to repair Windows from there.

Argh! That completely skipped my mind!

Hope the OP hasn't already gone for a clean install :D

Of course!
I was trying to sort this first thing this morning but in the end couldn't find the product code for Office so decided to delay the clean install.
Will try booting from the disc drive now!
Cheers for the help :)

Have managed to enter setup but windows repair won't solve the problem.
Basic question but if I do a clean install what's the best way to do it?
Also my operating system and programs are on an SSD with my documents/pictures/music on mechanical hard drives. I'm assuming that the documents and files will be ok following a clean install and I'll just have to download new drivers?
cheers for any help

A fresh install is probably the best move if the repair can't do anything.

If you unplug the HDD during the install then that will make sure that the new install will do nothing to your personal files. You can also just download the drivers straight away, so when you finish installing Windows on the SSD once you plug the HDD you don't have to wait for them to download.

Is this what most people do? Was trying to avoid opening my case which got damaged sometime ago but if it's necessary then I will - I guess this is just a precaution?

thanks but not sure I can do this as I can't access either SSD or mechanical hard drive due to the problems outlined in my original post.
