Windows explorer not responding...

Every time I press start and try to type something into the search field on the Start menu, I get the message "Windows explorer is not responding". I also get this when typing in the search box on My computer.

Does anyone know what I could do to fix this? Or the cause?

boot into safe mode and see if it does it in there (it most likely wont) to double check its software related.
If its working in safemode you know its an issue with 'non essential' software and you can investigate further. Try looking into what you've installed around the time it started happening and see if there's any restore points to before this.
If there are no restore points try uninstalling any recently installed programs.

Boot from your Windows disk and hit 'Repair your Computer'. Open the command prompt and type sfc /scannow then run it. Once finished restart.
