Windows Explorer

Hi all i have in total 4 SATA drives in my pc when ever i try to access them the message comes up windows explorer has encountered the following error blah blah blah and the hard drive shuts so i cant access it any ideas

will a clean install fix

what format are the drives is one fat32and one ntfs is one running linux ext2 or are they all ntfs

my advice would to download a live cd get captive ntfs on it see if u can accsess them that will tell you if its a windows problem (you dont need captive ntfs if you have fat or fat 32 partitions some distros read ntfs but do not write)

i reccomend dsl or knoppix to check
