quick question

ive experienced PCs in a workgroup environment that require a username / password combination to access shared PCs

but ive come across PCs that require no username and password to access shared stuff (this is in a workgroup, with no logon server)

anybody know specificly what setting this is in windows XP ?

Yeah it will be the administrator password for that local machine.

Have you setup sharing on the drive/folder?

Right click on drive/folder and click sharing/security and follow the menus?

If there is local username and password on the machine with the shares that matches the client logon, then it will access the share with no password prompt, if that username has access to the share.

Basically create a local user account on the server with the same password and give it permission to the share. If someone tries to access that share with the same username on the source machine it will have access.

If you disable simple file sharing in XP then it will default back to needing a password. leave it on and you shouldn't need one (in a workgroup anyhow)

FYI thats Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > Scroll down to the very bottom > (un)tick

If however your like me and want to disable simple file sharing but not have to be prompted for a password on various machines (ie my mother who cant handle such things) then on the XP rig hosting the file create a user account identical to the one that is trying to connect (although in theory you should be able to store the password on the machine that is trying to connect Vista Home Basic does not appear to support this!)

In essence, you can set the share permissions to allow Anonymous access, its obviously wide open in security terms but basically, thats what you're asking for.

ahh so the machines where shares are allowed without checking for passwords

are machines that have simple file sharing on windows XP turned on ?

Yep i'd guess so.

Either that or they happen to have an identicle account to the accounts on the machines that where trying to connect. (if that makes sense!)

nah my mum and dads pcs at home log on differently

but i did the minimal on those 2. turned off XP firewall, enabled file and print sharing, added some shared folders and it worked.

its just that lots of other windows XP machines ive come across, its asking for the local username and password. Maybe its that my parents have an account without a password so it cant ask for one ?
