I've got myself a little situation here, I always used the windows firewall instead of getting another one because it worked fine and im pretty safe behind a router anyway.

Few weeks ago I disabled some of the basic services that aren't needed like messenger etc but I think I may have stopped some I didn't mean to seeing as now windows firewall doesn't start.

When i go to start it in control panel then it says
"Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?"

When I go to start the service I get this
"Could not start the WIndows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer.

Error 1068: The dependancy service of group failed to start"

I did some googling and found the dependancies and one of them was off to which I enabled it, still nothing. Rebooted still same error.

Sorry for long post, any help would be appreciated.

Bring up the properties for the service and click the dependencies tab, you can see which services are needed there.

"Application Layer Gateway Service" is set to Automatic I presume?

Also if you are trying to start a service which you have set to "Disabled" when it asks you "Do you want to start the service?", it's not going to start, so make sure that all the dependancies aren't disabled. Might also be worth changing the disabled stuff back to automatic and rebooting the machine to see if it starts, that way everything is going to start when the computer loads and you can redo the disabled stuff, like messenger.

When i click the dependancies tab then I get
"Win32: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it"
Clicking OK on this error then I get 2 empty list boxes

Yep, Application Layer Gateway Service is on and set to automatic.

I thought about turning everything on then disabling things again but I thought there must be an easier way, seeing as a lot of them I dont need anyway but I don't know what they are

looking on my OS which is working :p

network connections
remote procedure call (RPC)
windows management instrumentation

are the dependencies , i would guess you have WMI disabled as i'm pretty sure without the other 2 windows would grind to a halt or be throwing up loads of errors and you probably wouldn't be able to get on the net to post about it .
