Windows firewall or McAfee Personal Firewall?

But anyway, since the OP asked between the Windows firewall or a FREE copy of McAfee Personal Firewall, there should be very little debate.

McAfee for the win.

exactly .. back to the original point as the OP had Norton previously it would suggest an above average user .. therefore there needs be no debate

McAfee for the win ... especially as its a free copy as well

:D

thats only because you cant give us any reason whatsoever to suggest the windows firewall isnt good enough.

The argument was that it's not needed - free or not. If he wants to try it then sure, why not? bu he'll be no better off with that than i am would be with xp firewall/

Even MS have agreed the need to implement outward-bound filtering with their Vista firewall.

easy thing to do for piece of mind. You cant seem to give me any example of why the xp firewall isnt good enough. I'm gonna leave it here, because any further debate isnt adding anythign to the thread unless you say something other than "becausee McAffee is free"

this is only needed when people want to use pirated software and they dont want the program to call home to check for authenticity, and to block spyware and viruses from sending outbound info (as said above, only a noob would have such things.)

if you stick to what you know, there's little need to venture far from a basic set of websites

So erm... like a noob?

I don't know many advanced PC users who don't need a firewall and a good AV... or many who stick to a very basic set of websites. :p

Im trying zone alarm, got good rating on the site i got it off. Any else recommend this?
Check my post above...

For PC sitting at home with no other PC's on the network - Fine.

If you ever plan on adding another PC into the mix - Nope.

I have to disagree with this statement:
"the only websites that have viruses on them are crack websites and porn websites"
I build PC's for a living , I'm a technician at a school at have to put right all sorts of problems staff and pupils have with Pc's .Many years ago I would build a new Pc and go online to test the modem connection , time taken about two to three minutes , this was before broadband and as soon as I came off line I had two to three virus's , one of them was the msblaster worm . This was just by going to Wanadoo home page . Theres worms & virus's lurking on servers never mind searching through web pages . My advice :Allways use a anti-virus program and a good firewall [ I used sygate for years ] dont anymore. Better still .........dont go on-line and you wont get hit !!

for msblaster you need to be patched or/and block your incoming ports

started off with norton myself.. its a virus on its own! then moved to zone alarm pro.. it was a vast improvement but still annoyed me at times.. moved now to Kaspersky Internet Security Version 6. Its an excellent job

i never said windows update wasn't a bad thing, and i never said to not use windows firewall

firewall alone stops blaster, and ms patches cover up the holes
