I've had this install of Windows 7 since December 23rd 2009, and it has not really slowed down, but Windows is taking up more and more space.

But the Windows folder is taking up 16gb and in there the WINSXS folder is taking up about 7gb.

In total the windows install is taking up 23gb, surely that's about too much no?

Thanks.

Well, what do you have installed?

I've all got sorts of stuff on mine and in total my Windows folders is under 14GB in size :)

I installed mine around 5th January 2010 just for reference, and it's as fast as ever too ^^

That's not an unreasonable size for the WinSXS folder. My overall Windows folder weighs in at 16Gb. Maybe you've gota ridiculous temp folder, or some restore points in Windows?

Sounds as if your adding the Winsxs and the Windows folder size together to get a total.

To get my total I'm right clicking on C drive where it tells me I've used 24gb. On my desktop I'm not so bothered and rarely prune it at all as it's a 94gb partition but on this I've only got 30.1gb partition for Windows.

This is to be expected hence why I havent moved to an SSD yet with 7 :(

We have this problem at work with the Windows 2008 servers with all the patching it & various other runtime libraries we keep this really chews the space up. Before with Win2003 depending on pagefile we could get away with just a 12GB VMDK for the OS install (mainly webservers). In some cases we have had to create servers (only a few clicks when using virtualisation tech) and patch them fresh to keep the disk sizes down.

You could turn off the hibernate file to free up some space (from raised cmd powercfg /hibernate off).

This post does a pretty good job of explaining why its happening and their thinking behind it.

My old vista install started taking up 33gb. No idea what happened. Now on 7 and happier with the size, although performance is about equal :)

So you're including Program Files in this? In that case it's fine.
