windows from drive to drive

i have server 2003 installed on a pata disk but i need to copy it to a sata. the sata will be staying in the same machine and the mobo has both sata and pata connectors onboard. what would be the easiest and free way of doing this ?

You need to take an image of the disk and write it on to the other drive. Cant remember the name of the program. Will investigate.

Acronis or Ghost will do it.

You will most likely get boot issues tho given the different first partition location.

Might end up doing a recovery console fixboot and fixmbr afterwards.

knew i'd have to image from one to the other but what free software can i use ?

I've used "xxclone" many times on XP systems without fault and it would appear to cover Server 2003 going by the support page too : http://www.xxclone.com/xxclone.zip

Whatever you use, I'd do it from a bootable cd/usb or whatever. I've always had problems with the ones you actually install to windows.

I use a bootable Ghost disk but it's not free unfortunately.

Ghost is just a pain.

gave up, couldnt get the shuttle to detect either of the sata drives
