Windows Game Losses

Quake 3 Arena runs fine for me on 7 64bit
Quake 2 ditto
Quake (circa 96, WinQuake) runs too

What errors are you getting in Q3? I've not been beaten by any retro game bar Micro Machines V3. Can't get the graphics options (gl is it?) to work properly. Can run it in software mode but it looks pants compared to how I remember it running on my Hercules 16MB

Homeworld Cataclysm, Uprising, and Incoming. I am on Win7 64, the first two just don't work, and Incoming will not recognise my joystick or keyboard :S

HW: Cataclysm also runs fine for my on 7 64bit

Silver and both Crusader games, though I recently managed to tweak No Regret into a semi-working state. Still runs a bit faster than it should, but it's playable.

The posts here make me believe that there are stranger things at work here than a possible Win 7 incompatability.

Generally a game that works for one of us doesn't seem to work for another and vice versa on the same OS.

I wonder if there's a general problem with the combinations of certain OSs, video cards, and audio cards etc.?

Do you do anything specific to run it? It just says it cannot run under my version of windows, no matter the compatibility options I chose :(

Can't remember off the top of my head, still on holiday. Will have a look when I'm home next week. Iirc there's bundles of threads on various Quake forums for running it in 7. Q3 still looks rather nice at big resolutions and goes like **** off a shovel! A group of us recently had a couple of Unreal Tournament matches. That runs on 7 well too ;)

Btw Quake Live is probably a better bet unless you crave custom maps etc. I've not played it for a while as I didn't like to constant pushes to buy "Pro" access or whatever it's called. For a quick blast it's perfect

Number of things not running for me, the latest (causing me to start this thread) being Quake 3 Arena.

But also: Loderunner on-line, Scrapland, Thief 2, Max Payne 1, and System Shock 2 crashes after about 5 minutes.

In fairness Thief 2 & System Shock 2 have been a bit iffy for a while now.

Bit of a coin toss, but I've been lucky enough to get SS2 working pretty much perfectly on Windows 7 with only cutscenes failing to play :D

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. The game actually runs well up until the point where you have to use the big gun on the ship. A bug prevents the camera from working correctly so the game is unfinishable unless you're running it on windows XP.

Luckily you can find save games to get past this point, but that poses more problems e.g. custom fov, difficulty mode settings, inventory etc.

It's a shame because this is without a doubt the best horror game I've ever played.

I miss X-Wing Alliance, allegedly there are ways to make it work but I've never managed it. I could run it in XP mode on W7 pro but that doesn't allow hardware graphics acceleration :(
