Hello.

Having problems with my hard drive and/or windows xp files.

Earlier this evening, my computer bsoded. Didnt get a chance to read it as i was watching tv. Computer restarted booted into windows. After about a minute it did the same thing, except it wont boot into windows.

Sometimes when i try to boot into windows it gives me a message like

"\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" is corrupt."

It tells me to use the recovery console via the xp cd, i get into it but then im baffled as to what to do lol. I did run a chkdsk and it said there was an unrecoverable problem or something like that.

My hard drive setup is current in a raid 0, with 2 120gb seagate s-ata drives.

One of the hard drives, or possibly both not sure, was making a wierd noise, like a change in pitch kind of. Hard to explain.

Up until sunday i had just been running 2 drives, one for windows one for games etc. I also added 2 more sticks of ram to make 4 total, but i doubt that would effect it.

Just wondering if one of my hard drives is dead, or whether its just because part of windows has become corrupt and needs to be repaired.

If one of my drives is dead, its not the end of the world as i backed up stuff for when i re formatted on sunday.

Anyone know if my drive will still be in warrenty, its about 3 1/2 years old.

Thanks

How odd

thought id check all cables were in. They seemed to be.

Decided to try one last time, managed to boot into windows. Typed this from the pc.

Only made the dodgy noise once when trying to boot.

Offhand I'd say that was a corrupt registry, think you've been real lucky to boot into Windows.
It's happened to me several times, until I realised that having multiple logins seems to make this occur.

after just managing to read my serial number and model number, i checked on the seagate site and apparently it runs till dec 2009 so thats a relief

a quick update

about 2hrs ago i guess, the noise came back then went, then got pretty much spammed with hard drive error in windows, then it reset and would just keep resetting on the xp loading screen.

bitten the bullet and formatted, installed windows onto the working drive.

Hi Sid,

Weird stuff,

check cables and cooling.

did you carry out a full drive scan check in windows? with all the boxes ticked including to scan for bad sectors. It's still worth doing.

look here http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=e...\CONFIG\SYSTEM"+is+corrupt.&btnG=Search&meta=

do a bit of digging and see what info you can find.

drives making noises they are not supposed to does not sound good. The older/slower drives are more noisy - they click and grind and get worse with age. Yours shouldn't be doing what you describe though. Are the noises high pitched, or mechanical noises, or both?

if you do end up returning a drive, it's worth wiping it clean of data, there is special free software that enables you to do this (formatting the drive in windows doesn't get rid of data if you were not aware).

the data will be messed up anyway, as it was part of a raid 0 array.

But i'm gonna have a fiddle with it over the weekend, as all my other stuff is on my working hdd now
