Windows has changed my monitor settings overnight and I cannot seem to revert them?

Hi all,

I run two monitors, Main monitor is connected by HDMI currently and is a 4k 160hz 27" display and was set as Primary, monitor 1 in my settings. The box is still ticked.
Second monitor is a 1080p 120hz display and was connected with a DP cable and set in Portrait, extended, monitor 2 in my settings.

Monitors were set like this for the past month, cables are this way simply because the 1080p had been connected to a different PC previous and needed DP to hit 120hz on it's older GPU.

Only today when I boot up, all my icons are on the left portrait monitor and despite the 4k being ticked as the main display, the main display is now number 2 the secondary portrait is now number 1. Nothing seems to revert this back to how it was previous unless I run the system as a single display on second screen only.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? Google simply has me go through the motions of ticking the primary display box. I have rebooted, tried swapping priorities, and nothing sets my main monitor back to display 1 with all the icons?

I will try unplugging the DP cable from the GPU. But this not being resolved at the desktop is bugging me.

I have swapped the cables over.

I now have my main monitor as display 1, and the box is again ticked, but now again my icons are all over on display 2 which is the 1080p portrait monitor now numbered as 2. And as its connected by HDMI now it's only a 60hz display (old monitor needs DP or dual DVI) . This is ridiculous.

Edit, strangely enough, if I position the second monitor to now sit on the right hand side, the icons go to the main monitor. This makes no sense.

Does sound pretty odd. Have you checked/confirmed the resolution and other details are set correctly for each monitor?

Might be worth trying a windows driver reset (Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B) to see if that helps at all.

Hi, checked it all, lots of strange things with Windows 10 updates recently. Also lost the three dots for file explorer so I can adjust settings, the install on this PC is around a month old. Secondary use for now.

I ran the sfs/scannow command and got my monitor issue resolved. But I did this to resolve my file explorer missing it's three dots. It's all a ploy to get me to install Windows 11 lol.
