I have Googled this but can not find an answer for my situation. i am wondering if anyone here has had similar and knows a solution or what the cause may be.

basically windows either asks me to change the "color" scheme, or does it automatically.
At the time i am doing almost nothing, just with a browser window open, maybe playing youtube (in SD), Outlook open, etc.

I have just upgraded form a very old AMD 4200+ with 6GB ram, and i never got this issue then.

My Spec is:
Windows Ultimate (x64)
2 x Xeon E5630s (quad core with hyper-threading so 16 threads)
36 GB ram
1 x HD 6950 (flashed to 6970) 2GB vram (powering 2 HD monitors)
1x Nvidia Quadro 4000 2GB vram (powering old DELL ultrasharp @ 1440x900)
Windows and most programmes are installed on a 256 SSD drive.
I have a clean install of windows, all drivers/bios/windows are up-to-date
I am virus/adware/malware free!

At present, my CPUs are at 1%
Ram usage is at 8GB (seems high)
My HD6950, has clocked up to 880MHZ (from the idle 500MHZ), although i dont see why, as i only have this OCuk page open (and task manager + afterburner)...
Windows has changed my color scheme to basic :-(

Sounds like a GPU issue. Try running some GPU stress tests. I used to use furmark but have been told this actually damaging? So perhaps try another stress test.

Thank Macky

I have ran FurMark and all seems OK, although it does drop into basic Colour scheme.

What i have noticed, and i cant seem to find any settings to change this:
Afterburner has:
GPU1 = HD6900 Series
GPU 2 = GF100GL (i assume this is the Quadro 4000)

Although AfterBurner classes the Quadro as GPU 2, i think it is the "system default GPU", as this is the GPU that outputs the bios window on startup.

FurMark has 3 GPUs listed:
GPU 0 = Quadro
GPU 1 = HD6950
GPU 2 = HD6950 (i only have 1 HD6950!)

The HD6950 works well as it should in FurMark, clocks to its max (880MHZ, etc) and temps get up to 80c.

When i run FurMark, it runs on the HD6950, and even if i run it windowed on the monitor connected to the Quadro card, it still uses the HD6950 (the Quardo stays in idle mode).
Is this correct.
i cant seem to make it run at all using the Quadro card (i have also tried Heaven Benchmrk, and this also only runs on the HD6950)

In addition, PhotoShop, ONLY detects the HD6950 and not the Quadro card (i would prefer to use the Quadro card for photoshop).

I have noticed, that no mater what i run on the PC the Quadro card mostly stays in idle mode (or is only running at a few %, then drops back to idle).

If anyone can advice me on the best setup, or indeed how to set this up correctly, i would be very grateful.
(i am not PC illiterate, and can make most config changes happily)

This happens to me sometimes but only when I run particular games. The most recent example being GTA V. It gets old very fast.

is there any way to find out what is using a GPU?
i have tried swapping the primary order in the bios, but everything still seems to use the AMD card.
I can not find any windows (or other software) that controls what is used for what, etc.

However, in AfterBurner, the clock speeds keep increasing now and then, but i dont know what the card is actually doing, as everything i test with no mater what screen i use, says the AMD is powering things still
