My windows install has somehow grown to a huge size.

My C: drive is only used for windows and apps, No Games, No Media.

I set it to 30gb when I built this PC 18 months ago,
I have moved my docs and my page file to my D: Drive when size started to become an issue.

Now the folder c:windows = 24gb I have cleared all the other folders out of useless info and dead file but what on earth can be making Windows that big?

I am thinking im going to have to do the whole NUke and rebuild but i really dont have time right now for a full reinstall.

Any suggestions?

It's just windows. Over time it bloats and gets mahoosive. Same as my 6 year old laptop. Unfortunately, when I bought it, they didn't supply me with a key to reinstall, and my XP install has now bloated to about 25GB. Considering it only has a 40GB hard drive in it, that's a lot. The easiest solution is just to reinstall.

no the easiest way is to turn off system restore & then turn it back on.

my OS install was 20GB then after 6 month was 120GB turned off system restore & turnt back on again dropped to 40GB

30gb? are you running XP?

Try 30gb with Vista and it'll probably throw a wobbly after the first piece of software you install. :)

There's software to find the XP key you are using: Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder

Don't forget to regularly use e.g. ccleaner to get rid of all this crap that builds up. Also lessen the size of your system restore should you choose to use it.

Disable or clean up System Restore, disable hibernation (if you arent using it). You can also run vsp1cln.exe from a cmd prompt and this will clean up after SP1 - its good for around a gig of space if you aren't planning to uninstall SP1 :p
