Hi all,

For remote access in WHS - Do I have to have a Static IP from my ISP?

...or does MS take care of it through xxxx.homeserver.com..?

Thanks

I've not used it, or have any idea what you're talking about.

But I assume your media server has a connection to Microsoft, which says "hey, MS, this is my IP" so when you connect via the MS site, it will go straight to your machine.

-if you reset your router (and get a new IP) then your machine will say "hey MS, this is my new IP" etc :)

If you register via the console the xxx.homeserver.com address it will take care of this for remote access.

You'll also have to setup the user accounts that you want to use for remote access with the permission to login as well

thanks

I have done this and it all worked fine for a few days

...but today - when I turned on the WHS - the 'Network' icon was showing red 'critical'...? and then I had to click the 'setup' or 'configure' ... then it refreshed and all was ok and showing green..?

...I was thinking... was this because my router had been assigned a new IP address from my ISP?

....So does Microsoft actually actually handle it via DDNS?

Thanks
