I set up WHS1 years ago - and have made backups of all of our PCs, netbook etc. on a more or less regular basis for a long time.

I always wondered if I would ever use it - it just sat in the spare bedroom connected via a devolo powerline adaptor.

Well I have recently been having problems with Windows Update - not working and I could not install IE10 or IE11 - it wouldn't install the "pre-requisites". Investigation some sort of "store" was corrupted. How? Win7 operated normally except the update and Windows Defender wouldn't work.

I tried an "upgrade reinstall" retains all progs - just replaces windows files - that wouldn't work because of same corruption.

SO - looked backed through windows update log and started seeing error messages from last June (!). I had a spare SSD (150GB to replace exisitng 128GB OS drive at some time) so I found a WHS backup from May 2013 - and set about installing backup onto the new drive. Took 5 hours over home network. Said "completed - reboot"

BUT drive wouldn't boot - obviously wasn't set up as boot drive. Pur in OS disc (with SP1 donloaded from digitalriver). Went into recovery module and after 2 goes (rebuild boot manager, BCDrebuild, boot repairs) - it rebooted smoothly and - GREAT - I have a backup reinstalled. WU says I need 95 updates - after 3 cycles / reboots all is complete and I have an up to date Win 7.1 SP1 with IE11 etc. Now all I have to do is update the LR catalogue etc and my own files. A lot less hassle than a complete reinstall. Put old drive back in and will do that later when my brain has rested!

So, thank you WHS1
