Windows Home Server - I've got mine

Tried the RC and liked it, but have a couple of macs in our household and couldn't get it to work with them how I wanted. Each of the shared folders in WHS is treated as a seperate share by the macs, so you have to mount each one individually.

Aside from that issue (a dealbreaker for me) I liked the ease of use and thought it was a good product.

has lots of features for first time networkers, it's based on windows 2003, has a vista feel to it

been out on rc for a while.

annoyed that a lot of us who beta tested cant get a test of RTM even on a timed expired copy. It was promised to a fair few of us to start off with, :(

also annoyed there is no 64bit connector application available at this time. And wont be for release.

But on the whole its a very good product, having 64bit os does not stop you accessing any shares, but you could not use any of the other features.

anything from a p3 upwards would run it fine.

Key to it is plenty of hdd space and a 100mb + network really.

And 512mb of ram min.

Basically you set it up on a machine, unplug the keyboard/mouse and monitor and then forget about it. When you need to do anything on the machine you use the remote connect from your client pc to connect up and performa any maintenance you may wish to do.

Its basically a nas but with more features. Can back up all the machines on your network and such, has fault tolerant storage as long as you have more than 1 hdd installed.

Got ISOs of the betas and RCs, took too long to install so gave up on it. Seems like a good idea, dunno if it will actually take off. How many people ("mum's and dad's") will actually having a dedicated computer running this? I think it is a bit ahead of its time.

It probably is a bit ahead of it's time in terms of the idea. In terms of the execution it is a bit laggin behind the times. Just as Apple are picking up marketshare along comes an app that gives us a home file server and automatic backup, yet it doesn't work with a mac (the filesharing does to a point, but the backup facility not at all).

It's ironic really considering the interface is very mac-like (in that it's pretty straightforward, limited options so as not to confuse). Maybe by the time WHS 2.0 appears then it'll support Mac properly and the teething issues will be gone. All those who shun Vista till SP1 would do well to sidestep this release until version 2/3. It's revolutionary, but not ready for prime-time yet.
