Hi,

Stating to build my own NAS and toying with either XP or WHS. So downloaded the trial of WHS to have a quick play. Looks very nice and a few decent features.

However one of the biggest issues for me would be portablilty of drives. So I had 2 * 500 GB drives and mark WHS to duplicate it all. Would be nice to remove one drive and say take it to a friends house easily or just hide it away when I'm on holiday.

I tried removing a drive and it went and deleted all the data and guess formatted it ? So is that how it works, if so I might as well go back to XP and just use robocopy ?

No, Duplication is used as a software RAID. The data is stored in 'tombstones' on the first drive (Which is partitioned into 20gb system and the rest as data). Its meant as a Home Server with data redundancy, not as a portable hard drive copier. Removing a drive makes WHS think the drive has failed.
