Anybody here built/building a rig for Windows Home Server?

Please could you list your spec. and cost (please estimate if using existing/spares) so I can get an idea of what others have gone for.

Thanks in advance.

LOL ... this is something i have been looking into today , well the whole virtual private networking but only for a handfull of users and using xp.
and my current system.

i would suppose it depends on your requirements etc.

The pre-built HP HX475 seems pretty good for an all-in-one setup. The iTunes add-on also sounds quite good. The only thing is the price isn't great for the hardware provided. I've found a HP Proliant server for half the price with much more potential for future upgrades if needed.

To be honest I would probably have spare hardware when I get round to getting a new PC for Vista Ultimate.

I haven't used WHS since I'm more of a Linux-server type of guy but I do have a home server doing nearly identical tasks. The cost is really up to you. It mostly depends on how many disks you want. If buying from OcUK the Asus barebones systems are a great deal. Any processor from the last half decade or so would be more than plenty, along with 512+ MiB RAM.

EDIT: This is a nice start

Add up to 3 TB worth of disks to suit your needs.

I made myself a WHS system. Using a full tower case i had (Bought from here) with a tagan 580W psu (Overkill, but it was a spare)

Rest of the specs were bought as cheap as possible. I even went B Grade to save even more on the mobo.

OcUK 1GB (2x512MB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit - £13.99
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4000+ 2.10GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail - £34.99
**B-Grade** Asus M2N4-SLI (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £24.99
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKS) 1 £55.99

Power isnt important. Its now got 3x500gb drives in it. You want to make your system drive the biggest drive you have. WHS automatically partitions 20gb for the system, and the rest is storage. As you can see, it was only £75 for the mobo, cpu and ram. I used a PCI graphics card i had spare to set it up. It was done on the cheap.

Ive had the beta on my old rig for a while, not really using it as im at uni, and its only got a small drive in it:

AMD Athlon XP 2100+
nForce 2 Chipset Mobo
1GB DDR RAM
iDEQ SFF case with 200w PSU
80GB SATA HDD

I bought the Case and Mobo and CPU 2 years ago for £100, so there prob worth much less now. Not sure on actual costs. It runs perfectly well on this spec, no issues at all. Im going to stick 2x 500GB drives in it when I move back home and use it for a file server etc.

I recently upgraded my server from a P4 3GHZ, 1GB ram and 40GB HDD to a Dual Core E2140, 2GB ram and 160GB HDD SATA for under £100. Because Im running Windows Server 2008 with WHS on Virtual PC alongside each other and the performance seems to be good so far.

I assume thats a release candidate and not the Longhorn Server Beta. Whats its like? Any real reason to use it over 2003?

And why are you virtualising a WHS in a Windows server? Doesnt the 2008 Server do all the WHS does and more?

Yeah it’s the RC, Im giving it a try to see what IIS7 is like compared the previous version. I installed Server 2008 before I got hold of WHS from work but I couldn’t find a big enough HDD to install WHS so I decided to run it in virtualisation to see if it’s worth buying.
Im liking Server 2008 with the new feature compared to Server 2003 and would recommend trying it if you get a chance. I might give WHS a miss and wait for the full release of Server 2008.
