Hi I have built a windows home server Abit motherboard, on board Sound, vid, 1G Lan. 1gig memory. It is housed in an antec 300 with 450w power supply. No optical drives. It has 4 sata ports all used with 1TB samsung drives giving about 3.6T. I only have (400G free)

I have 2 PCI ports free and 1 PCIE free.

This needs to be upgraded. The max space in the case is 10 drives but not sure of what type of expansion cards to get. I am also looking to use the PCIe to put an External SATA card. (to expand up to a max of 19 drives) This leaves the 2 PCI slots free.

Is this a viable route to take. At the moment HS is set up so it sees all drives a 1. I do not think HS can use raid, as this is an option i would like to consider. Not sure what raid i could use.

Should i build a server using Windows server 2003 / 2008.

This machine is connected to a Gbit lan and it streams to a Netgear 8000 media player. (Music, avi, mkv files)

Thank you for your help

This would fit in your PCI-E x4 or X16 slot. If you have a graphics card in a CPI-X16 slot, then get a PCI one to free up some fast PCI slots. Gives you a much better selection. That card WILL NOT fit into anything less that a PCI-E x4 slot.

With WHS the shares are as one drive, but if you select Duplication then it automatically duplicates only the folders you want across drives. I dont see what benefit RAID would give you. What exactly do you want from it?
