SO...

I posted a thread in the HD section regarding the Synology DS1010 and it's a fairly elegant solution however it's £600 without drives.

Are there any "in favour" cases at the moment for building a home server? It'll need lots of storage and need to be quiet.

It'll also be used as a back end for media players.

What are people using these days - atom or low end core 2 duos?

Ive had a number of home servers + nas boxes. My overall opinion now is that a NAS is worth the price if you value space + dont need to be running any custom apps. I built an Atom machine as quiet as I could with everything I wanted, then 6 months later replaced it with an Acer Revo PC as it was smaller and better on power.

Another 9 months down the line I've decided to go back down the NAS route as I need more storage. I like the fact I can RDP into a home server and run anything I want, but in contrast a NAS does do everything I need by default and takes up a lot less space and power.

Get a high end NAS like the DS1010 and firmware upgrades etc will allow you to easily upgrade in the future as needed.
