Windows Install disc boot problems

Hi all

I'm just in the process of putting together a new PC, and I've unloaded all my old components into a different case, and am now trying to install windows back onto it (onto a different hdd though). Having some strange problems that I can't figure out.

All the components are identical to how they were when I last installed windows, except for the hard disk. The problem is, when trying to boot the windows vista install dvd, I was just seeing a black screen with a flashing cursor for about 5 minutes, before getting the message:

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

This was weird, as the boot priority was set fine in the BIOS, the dvd drive and the hdd were both recognized.

What was weirder was that I then decide to reset the BIOS settings to default, and after then trying to boot from the dvd again I get this message:

"The file may be corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum"

Does anyone have any ideas? Frustratingly I'm stuck here trying to figure this out instead of getting on with building my new sandybridge rig!

Unplug and replug all the data cables, and see if that helps. If that doesn't work you could try clearing CMOS.

It might also be worth checking the disc isn't scratched.

I'll try CMOS - I've already tried different windows discs to see if that was the problem. The only variation is that if I boot with nothing in the drive I get the "reboot and select proper boot device" immediately rather than after a few minutes wait.

seems to suggest that your OS install media is kaput :)

I don't know where your Fista install disc came from .... but your optical drive can't see any bootable media in the drive as far as I can see :)

You could try a Linux Live CD and see if that is seen by the DVD drive just to eliminate that as the cause of your problem

+1 for this. Sounds like a dodgy copy
