Thought this was an issue with the Server 2008 install but it's happening with a known working Win7 Ultimate disc too so it's something up with the PC.

When booting from the Server 2008 or Win7 Ultimate DVD (both known to work) it says 'Windows is copying files' with a left to right progress bar, then it goes blank. Shortly after that the screen cycles from white, to grey, to blue/green/red/grey bars of colour every second or so and nothing else happens. I can't CTRL+ALT+DEL out of it so have to power off/back on.

It would boot to Win7 Pro which was preinstalled, but I've since removed the partitions and formatted to NTFS - still no joy. I've also updated the BIOS to latest from Lenovo website.

Any ideas? Never seen this happen before. HDD tests ok, screen/connection working fine as BIOS displays and Win7 Pro booted fine too.

I'll try a memory test next then, what's the best way to go about this? I think GParted has a memory test included?

That said, does the fact that Win7 Pro pre-installed on the machine worked fine rule out memory?

Memtest passed after running for over an hour. Any ideas anyone? I'm stumped. This is a challenge for the vast collective knowledge of OcUK!

Graphics card is overheating would be my bet, that's the usual cause of screen disruption like that.
Before I formatted the drive, Win7 Pro loaded fine though, it's just when booting from any of the disks I've tried that I get this error. The disks I'm using are working as they've been used before and can't all provoke the same result. Check this vid:

WTF?

Just downloaded Ubuntu and that runs fine from the DVD - tempted to keep that install as it was up and running (off the DVD mind) in about 2mins!

While in Ubuntu, I opened 'About This Computer' - it lists Graphics as Unknown and Graphics Driver as Unknown - could this be the issue with the failed MS installs?

It was the monitor. Tried a 19" at work and it ran straight through to Server 2008 setup!

My monitor - Samsung 23" LED via VGA - works fine with my laptop, and I was running Linux Ubuntu on this PC with it last night without any problems, so I've no idea why Win7/Server 2008 setup didn't like it. Resolution too high perhaps?

I remember I had a similar problem once. It drove me mad at the time and took me an absolute age to work it out! I still can't really explain it.

For some reason my monitor would work fine within Windows but whenever I tried to boot from a disk it just wouldn't work. I only noticed this when I came to do a clean install :( It was like the monitor lost the ability to support low resolutions or something. V. weird.

I replaced it as it was an old(ish) monitor at the time and I wanted a bigger one anyway! :)
