i have recently installed a new hard disk. although i use my traditional windows xp cd to boot from it does not run when i boot up my pc. it sounds like it does but it just doesnt display any of the intro to installing windows.

i recently bought a new graphics card thinking my one had broken (which it actually has) but to no success. it just displays a blinking cursor in the top left corner of the screen and the cd spins round and nothing. i have various version of winxp but it still just does not want to load the OS.

help!

Have you set the boot order to boot from CD? (then you get the press any key message)

If you have, is the CD bootable?
I'm guessing one must be if you have tried a few.

i'm on a laptop at the moment and when i put the cd in it boots up. i've used the cd before and its booted up. i made a new copy of the windows installation and it booted up on my laptop when i put it in...but soon as it goes into the desktop it doesnt boot up. i've seen the autoexec.bat file so it should work as far as i know. im struggling seriously...help

might not be bootable..

That doesn't make it bootable.

Doesn't mean it's bootable.
If you copy a CD it won't be bootable.

Look say here on how to make a bootable CD.
The Image file he uses can be found here (2.) Download boot file. (bootfiles.zip ~1.07KB) to save you messing around. (right click Save Target as on bootfiles.zip)

okay i thought it was mistaken. reading in progress ta (just never had a prob with it before)

Yeh, there will be a boot sector on the disk that won't copy if you only copy the files :). You can probably boot from a floppy boot disk that has cd-rom support and then load setup from dos.

If your using Nero, get any of the below wrong and it won't be bootable.

xpsp2_slip_06.jpg

First, start Nero Burning ROM and choose CD-ROM (Boot) from the New Compilation's Boot page. Then, under "Source of boot image data," choose "Image file" and select C:\Microsoft Corporation.img by clicking the Browse button. Then, select the option titled "Enable expert settings (for advanced users only)" and change "Kind of emulation" to No Emulation, and change "Number of loaded sectors" to 4. The "Load segment of sectors" option should remain at its default value of 07C0. When this step is completed, the Nero Burning ROM application should resemble the following:

When you burn the CD, always go back to the BOOT tab and make sure it's exactly like that picture (C:\Microsoft Corporation.img can be called anything) before you hit BURN.
