Hi,
I've installed Windows on a hard disc but i'm having some problems.

I have a computer that i'm trying to fix. I tried booting from the windows cd to install a fresh copy to that hdd but everytime i press a key to boot from CD it begins to load the installation and then the machine just simply resets itself.

So I took the hard disc out and installed windows using my main machine. It works fine, i've tried it in 3 different computers and it works fine. So I put the hard disc back in the computer and it won't load at all. it just freezes on the screen where you choose to boot normal or safe mode.

So i boot in safe mode. The installation freezes with the last file being loaded as mup.sys. I understand that after this file is loaded windows begins allocating resources? I've tried another hard drive in this computer and exactly the same happens?

I'm really stuck and I don't know what to do with this. I need to have this computer working and i'm not really sure what to do at this stage.

Why do some computers have real problems booting from cd? If only it would manage this then it should be fine.

Thanks

I had a simular problem when i restared my computer i got the options for safe mode, normal, ect and whihc ever i choose it just rebooted so i stuck the XP cd in a ran the repair and the chck disk and it worked fine.

EDIT

Or try putting a different CD drive in the computer, one that you know that works.

Well your experiments indicate its the machine not the drive, so check all the leads and check the bios settings. Its a bit funny that it started loading though, so it could just be drivers ie reinstall over the copy already on there.

Actually i would set bios to optimised defaults, failing that reset cmos completely
