Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows the size of the main install + updates?

I want to buy a SSD for a few laptops so need to know.

Thanks in advance.

Ash

Probably looking around a working size of 25Gb, that'll alter as more updates come out and depending on other factors, whether you need hiberation, swap file sizes etc. That's for Windows 7 Pro btw, Home premium won't be hugely different.

I've installed SSDs in lots of laptops over the last 18 months and watched their usage, and I would say that 64GB is the absolute minimum most people should consider.

Agree, I have a 64GB SSD which has about 10GB free on it and I watch where I install things to and try and keep whats on C to a minimum. I wish I'd gone for a 128 now just for a bit more breathing room.

If it's going into a laptop I assume there wont be any other storage devices so the space will probably fill up quickly and may limit the usability depending on how you use the laptop

I've got a 60Gb SDD as my OS drive, currently has

Windows 7 pro
OpenOffice
itunes (storage is not on this drive, just the program)
Abobe photoshop CS4
Adobe Dreamweaver CS 4
Adobe Premiere Pro CS 4
+ about 40 smaller programs which probably make up about 2 Gb in total.

I still have 29.2 Gb free.

30GB is the bare minimum I'd consider.

Remember most laptops have memory card slots, you could get a 16gb memory card and redirect photos/videos/documents to that folder

Ive got a 60gb atm but desperately need to upgrade to 120gb as the space just filled up over time, i would suggest a 120gb just to be safe.

I'm planning to use that exact idea for the 64GB lappy. It's only used for office work but in case she wants some music, I'm leaving one in.

64GB is fine unless you plan to install a lot of un-needed bloat wear.
I have 17GB free after installing windows, office, photoshop and all sorts of video editing software etc. If I check my performance tab in task manager it shows I have 69 processes running. At the end of the day an SSD is really suited for OS & essential everyday programs. Any more then this and the price imo isn't justified.

Disable hibernation! Gave me 14GB back! Also minimise the size of the page file, or move it to another drive, as that can take up a lot of room.

Hibernation takes up however much ram you have.

I leave it on with my netbook, hibernation is too handy to remove. It's got a 30GB SSD in there, W7 x64, Libre Office and some photos/music, still has about 5GB free.

System restore is off though, that would just fill the hard drive up
