Hey,

Has anyone here done the 5-day Windows Internals course before? The one by SysInternals / Microsoft people (same as the Windows Internals book authors).

I've been told it's 'very hardcore', just wondering what sort of preparation is wise to do in advance to get the most out of it, as I don't know much about the windows kernel structure currently, only the high level stuff.

Is it worth buying the book and working through it? Or is the course pace easy enough to follow? Any other worthwhile study material?

Thanks

The book can be really impenetrable sometimes and definitely requires re-reads. I would probably try the book first before considering paying for any kind of courses.

EDIT: You should also check out Mark Russinovich's Blog. He is a Technical Fellow for MS's Platform and Services Division [whatever that means!] and one of the very large brains behind Sysinternals and the books.

Get the book first and read it cover to cover, twice. That's what I did. I know ******* everything there is to know about the NT kernel now. Actually it was like 5 years ago so I probably should read it again to brush up :D

You will need to be versed in Computer Science to understand about 60% of the book. So if you've not got that, go do that first. Hmm this is starting to sound a lot like the Book Learning model in Eve Online :D

Personally I would not bother with the course. I attended his TechEd sessions last year in New Orleans and they were very good but didn't really teach you anything the book couldn't have.

Ok great thanks guys, course is paid for for me (I would never pay for Windows training :p) so I'll pick up the book and start cramming :) I've done a lot of work with the Linux kernel before + general comp sci so hopefully have a good enough foundation for it.
