Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong section....

I have a problem with my main PC. For reasons only known to itself it has decided to be extremely slow whilst on the internet.

What I have checked thusfar:
The router and cable modem are fine.
Other computers/laptops here work fine on line.

My main PC's internet connection started running dog slow about two days ago. Since then I have tried everything I can think of, including changing the way my PC accesses the router, but no joy.

My PC is connected to my router via a Devolo powerline network thingy. I have tried playing around with this and the cables but to no success. I have tried sticking a wireless card in my computer and connect to the router wirelessly but with no success - internet access is still dog slow. Infact, accessing the router via 192.168.1.1 seems a lot slower than normal.

At first I thought it could have been the powerline connection, but plugging my laptop into this is fine. I thought it could have been the software that controlls the NForce network adapters, but this is fine. I thought it could be a hardware problem, and so tried various wireless adapters/NIC cards; no change.

The only thing I can think of is some kind of software conflict. I have ran spyware and virus scans; defragged the computer; checked the system with hijack this; tried resetting the internet settings on the pc/router/cable modem but no change.

All signs point to some kind of software issue... but what?! The only thing I can think of is I recently bothered my arse to update to the latest NForce stuff for my motherboard, and several days previous to that I got the latest GeForce drivers. This was about 2 weeks ago, and it has been fine since then. All of a sudden, 2 days ago, I get the 'go-slow' internet. Thing is... nothing has changed on my PC, either hardware or software (to my knowledge). I am the only one with access to my PC, so there could be no family-related foul play.

I have also done a broadband speed test (www.speedtest.net). It is extremely slow on my problem PC, but runs fine with expected results on all my other PCs. My laptop records download speeds of 9.68Mbps, which is what I'd expect to see. My PC... 0.30Mbsec download speeds.

Any ideas guys? Anything I am missing? I don't want to go through the ballache of formatting my PC only to find the problem remains.

OK, I have tried this in safe mode with networking, but I still have the same problem - network speed (and thus internet speed at this PC) is dog slow. I have tried several different methods for connecting to the network, so I think I can rule out hardware.

Any more ideas before I take the plunge and format everything?

I have tried pinging other PCs and this seems fine.

Tried alternate browsers, no rogue settings anywhere that I can see, internal network speed between the various computers here and my problem PC is shocking - takes several minutes just to VIEW the contents of a shared folder on another PC for instance least of all transfer anything.

I don't have any Linux stuff to test with though :(. I may go ahead with the format anyway, can't hurt now, can it? :)

Cheers all.

I have just re formatted, all is well I can report. Just in time to install modern warfare 2!! Cheers for the help guys.

I'll give ubantu a try anyway, have always wanted to try that.
