at the moment i'm running xp media edition and i've just got xp pro through the uni Academic alliance thingy so I thought I'd do an update. I've put the pro disk in then picked the upgrade option but the cd key is always invalid.

I know 100% that this key works fine so my question is:

Q: Is there a difference in doing the downgrade and doing the normal install over the top with regards to the windows key used ?

just asking because I can try the full install option but it'll screw with all my installed apps unlike if I do the upgrade which its not letting me do.

********************* Update ********************

Scrap this request just done a google and discovered that its not possible to do a downgrade from windows media to xp pro without doing a fresh install :(

what key are you using?

the one that came with xphome or xprop?

xp media mate, was pre installed when I got the computer (seccond hand) but it appears its not what was origionaly ment to be on it as theres an xp home sticker on the side, so thought I'd get rid of the media edition and go with pro which I knows deffinatly not hucky.

But I've now got to do a full reinstall as downgrades are not supported :(

Windows Media Centre edition and XP Pro are much the same anyway, unless you specifically want to connect to a domain, in which case I think there's a workaround somewhere anyway.

yep , main reason I need to to the downgrade is i'm getting a strange error with a dll when using internet explorer to test local webpages which i need to do. So I thought i'd do an install over the top to try and fix the dll error only I don't have a media edition key becase it was pre installed and is probably a dodgy version, so i'm wanting to use my xp pro with its legit key but you can't downgrade :(

The Dll error i'm getting is:
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: mshtml.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2802 Offset: 000d7d15

This is happening nearly every time I try and load a local html page :(

any ideas on how to sort this as I don't fancy an afternoon reinstalling everything

Not sure why you are calling Media Ed to Pro a downgrade.... i'm pretty sure it's still considered an upgrade as far as the OS. Is it maybe not liking it because you're media edition has SP2 and you're trying to use a Pro disk that is pre-SP2?
