Windows laptop key

I have been asked to see if I can swap out an old laptop hdd for a ssd. There is no problem with that, its the Windows key.
The laptop came with Windows 8.1 and has not been updated to Win 10. Where will I find the key for Windows as there are no stickers or anything in the manuals, only about recovery/factory restore etc.

It's embedded in the BIOS and windows should pick it up automatically.

Easiest option would be to use your pc and ghost it? stick both drives in and boot a ghost disc off cdrom and just copy it over.
