Windows LIVE Local Maps - Amazing !!!

Those maps are quite old. The pics were taken before my apartment was even built

I live in the field where the red circle is:

How are all these images generated? Are they using a big ol expensive piece of Satelite technology or something because some pics are outdated....confusion!
:D

Low-res stuff is satellite images and the high-res stuff is (from what I understand) a mixutre of satellite and plane imagery.

All stored on a girt big ol' computer system somewhere, not live....it's kinda impossible unless you have a billion or so :D

The weather satellites are pretty near-real-time though, as they regularly feed data down to the ground stations (and it's not nearly as large afaik). Places like weather.com and my old favourite World Wind (Again;)) incorporate stuff like that. It's not terribly exciting unless there's, say, a hurricane to watch :)

MS recently updated their VE to add complete colour coverage of the UK and lots of high-res images.

Shame the pic of my house is over 6 years old :p

I can almost zoom in enough to make out my town , rubbish coverage. :(
Whereabouts are you?

I was after Kirkcudbright (D&G) or near enough anyway. Used to spend holidays on a big estate up that way as a kid :)

Much better than GE imho, will be playing with this for hours :)

Apparantly Highworth is in Swindon according to that map so obviously theres a few things they still need to fix there.

edit: Just noticed you can get birds eye view which is very close up but only in big towns and cities unfortunately so I can't get it over my town :(

Birds eye view is so amazing, I can visit any city I like I think with a really close view, who needs holidays :D

Excellent image of the Statue of Liberty, now onto some other famous landmarks.. Looking at the Las Vegas Strip now :)

edit: Found Ceasars Palace :D

The Rainworth bypass (Completed June 2000) at my house is still in the bulldozer stage... so early 1999 I reckon. At least google earth's are from 2003. The quality around mansfield is nowhere near as good.

Still Derbyshire is mapped out much better though.
