Been quite happily using Windows Live Mail 2012 since installing Windows 10. Don't like the Windows 10 app, as it's far to basic and also doesn't seem to sync SENT mail items correctly.

Yesterday I got an Email from Microsoft saying:

Dear user,
In a few weeks, we will be making some changes to our email services that might impact your @outlook.com, @hotmail, @live or @msn email account. These changes will prevent your email from being delivered to the Windows Live Mail 2012 application that you use.

In order to continue using Windows Live Mail 2012 to send and receive email for your account, you need to install the latest update published here.

.......

But when I download and then try and install the update (KB3093594) it wont install and says:

The update patch cannot be installed by the Windows installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program etc. etc.

Any ideas anyone?

Rather like Windows Live Mail. Though I suppose in the end I could use the crappy Windows 10 mail app if I had to.

Thanks.

Whoops...

Found the answer. It's the 2011 version that I have and not the 2012 version. And 2011 isn't going to be supported any longer.

So looks like time to upgrade.

I was using WLM 2012 and got the message saying it's no longer supported. Switched over to the Win 10 app but it's not great.

Upgraded to WLM 2012 and that went fine. I then applied the update that Microsoft sent / directed me to and now WLM 2012 doesn't work! If you GOOGLE KB3093594 there are loads of moans about this!

Luckily I took a restore point before upgrading to WLM 2012. So just recovered back to what it was before this farce started.

Think I'll wait and see if Microsoft comes up with an amended update that doesn't bork WLM 2012. Good old Microsoft.

PS. joffy ... WLM 2012 is supposed to be going to be supported ... it's just that you need to apply the directed patch. Unluckily that then stops WLM 2012 from working.

Did a bit of digging and found this. Though like anything on the Internet these days, no way to tell if it's BS ;)

This is the issue: MS is performing this upgrade in waves of Outlook.com accounts. Unfortunately, they jumped too soon to send out this message.

Here's the word (courtesy of Ron Sommer MVP):

Login to your outlook.com account using a browser. Does it say Outlook.com or Outlook Mail (Preview)?

KB3093594 should only be installed if you have an outlook.com account that has been upgraded to Outlook Mail (Preview).

If you have more than one outlook.com account, you will have to decide if you want the accounts that have not been upgraded to Outlook Mail (Preview) to work or do you want the accounts that have been upgraded to work.

No Outlook Mail (Preview) accounts - do not install KB3093594.

An account has upgraded to Outlook Mail (Preview) - install KB3093594.

You lot updating to Win10 must like having All these problems....Keep testing it for us who prefer to stay with Win7 until Win 10 has no more problems.....But I think that is wishful thinking so I'll stay with Win7.

To be honest, I've not had many issues with Windows 10 myself. Certainly no show stoppers (EG. BSOD, crashes etc.). Just more little niggles like above and this issue also effects anyone using WLM on Windows 8 & 8.1 as well.

Only went for Windows 10 myself (retail install from USB3 thumb drive) because it was a total re-build of my PC. And as I was going to use a PCIe M2 SSD (NVMe) as my boot drive, really needed Windows 10 for the native NVMe drivers. Plus I also have retail copies of Vista and Windows 7. So could have always put my copy of Windows 10 aside and gone back to Windows 7 (on a SATA SSD) until things settled down.

Life... one BIG adventure :)
